Literacy Center of West Michigan

The Literacy Center of West Michigan is dedicated to empowering our community through literacy. We work with adults, both native speakers and English language learners, who read below a 9th grade level. Our tailored programs, including one-on-one tutoring and workplace-focused classes, are provided at no cost to learners. Despite serving over 800 adults annually with the help of 300 volunteers, the demand outweighs our capacity. With 55,000 adults in Kent County affected by low literacy, we strive to expand our reach and raise awareness of this critical issue.

Michigan United is primarily concerned with changing policies and laws. They also provide immigration legal services, grassroots education and know-your-rights programs, English classes and citizenship classes.

We’re a nonprofit connecting refugees to crucial services they can’t access alone. With just one part-time staff member and passionate volunteers, we’ve been at it since 2011. It all started when a volunteer noticed the struggles of a Congolese family and rallied local support. Now, Thrive is here to help refugees adjust to life in the US, one family at a time. Join us in making a difference!
